Every time a big rain rolls through Iowa, I remind people of the same thing: the most common reason I see water get into a basement is that water is not being diverted away from the house.
So walk around your house this week. Make sure your downspouts are actually on, and make sure they carry water away from the foundation, not straight down next to it. Clean your gutters out, or pay somebody to get up there and clean them for you. If you have big trees around your house, leaf guards are worth having.
Here is the part nobody wants to hear: when you sell your home, water problems in the basement are something you have to disclose. A little prevention goes a long way toward lowering that risk.
