Move Your Grill Away From the House (Your Siding Will Thank You)

I love grilling season as much as anyone. But here is something I see all the time as a Des Moines real estate agent: I walk out onto the deck or patio at a listing with vinyl siding, look up, and there is melted, wrinkled siding right where the grill sits.

When I mention it, sellers usually tell me, “Yeah, it did that. It is not a big deal.” Here is the thing: it can be. Buyers notice it, and it can turn into a repair item during the sale.

It does not take an open flame against the house - the heat alone can distort and wrinkle vinyl over time. So give your grill some room. Fire safety guidance says at least 3 feet from siding, railings, and anything else that can melt or burn, and your grill’s manual may call for more - follow whichever distance is greater.
