How to Check That Your Sump Pump Works Before the Next Big Rain

If you have a newer home in Iowa, you probably have a sump pump. Water drains along the foundation into the tile lines, into the pit, and the pump sends it back out and away from your house. When it works, you never think about it. When it does not, you find out at the worst possible time.

One common way to test it - check your pump’s manual first - is to slowly add water to the sump pit until the float rises and the pump kicks on, then stop adding water. If the water keeps rising and the pump does not kick on, stop and have it serviced before you actually need it.

As with anything involving electricity near water, keep cords, plugs, and outlets dry. If anything looks damaged, or you are not comfortable, call a pro.

And do your pump a favor: keep your downspout extensions on, so less water ever reaches the foundation in the first place.
